KRIO PHRASE OF THE WEEK

Arobo: cheating, profiteering (doing business as a middle-man)

  • BACKGROUND

Krio is the lingua franca of Sierra Leone. The language has been formed primarily through the interaction of British English, Yoruba, Igbo, Akan, and other West African languages. As a result, Krio has been a traveling language that has spread throughout West Africa influencing the Gambian Aku language, as well as both Ghanaian and Nigerian Pidgin. Krio also shares a great deal of linguistic similarities with Jamaican Patois, Gullah, and African American Vernacular English (AAVE). The Krio language is one of many forms of patois spoken in the diaspora. Sharing the language through art is an opportunity to unify people through the overlap of traveling languages.
